Sea Turtle Saved by OMCAR team

26th October 2010. A sea turtle was accidentally caught in the shore seine net in Agni Estuary region close to Mallipattinam. OMCAR staffs received this information through our volunteer group that was formed to exchange the information about the stranded marine animals in this region.
The turtle was in good health, without any injuries. My collegues measured its size and negotiated with fishers. Then, it was released back into the sea. It is a good sign for our team that our communication and fisher volunteer network is started to provide its service to exchange the information about stranded animals in the region.

DEAD PORPOISE WASHED ASHORE IN MALLIPATTINAM COAST, NORTHERN PALK BAY
I

Today (17th April 2010), I received a phone call from our volunteer. He informed about the dead marine mammal in Mallipattinam coast, in northern Palk Bay. After 40 minutes of driving my bike, I reached the site in a very hot day. I took some pictures and it was my first experience to see this beautiful creature. It was 4.4 feet length and weighed about 30 kg. It was black colored with wounds on the upper side of the body. Fishers suggest that it might be entangled trawler nets. It is a very peaceful marine mammal. I have seen this, for the first time in my life, but it was dead. Finless porpoise found both east and west coast of India. Not much study is carried out about Porpoise like Dolphins.

Scientific name of Finless Porpoise is Neophocaena phocaenoide. They are more shy than dolphins, more likely to disappear when encountered, preferring not to surface around boats and humans, or jump out of the water, as dolphins do. In comparison to dolphins, porpoises are very small. Porpoises seldom exceed 7 feet in length, whereas many dolphins can exceed 10 feet in length. Porpoises are also more robust than dolphins. Dolphins have a lean sleek body, whereas porpoises often appear chubby. The dorsal fin of the dolphin is shaped in a wave. Porpoises lack a rostrum or a beak. This rostrum is very prominent in dolphins. The teeth of the porpoise are spade-shaped, whereas the teeth of the dolphin are conical or cone-shaped.

Many porpoises do not live past their mid-teens. Porpoises have an intensive reproduction schedule that may play a role in their lack of longevity. A porpoise can become pregnant each year, give birth, and then it can become pregnant again five or six weeks later, so it can be nursing and pregnant at the same time. This can also happen in dolphins, but dolphins are larger in size and it seems their body is suited for handling such occurrences, and anyhow it is less common. Dolphins can live in an upwards of fifty years.

Adult Finless Porpoises are a uniform light grey colour. Newborn calves are mostly black with grey around the dorsal ridge area, becoming fully grey after 4–6 months. Adults grow more than 1.55 m (5 ft) in length and up to 30–45 kg (65–100 lb) in weight. Males become sexually mature at around 4–6 years of age, and females at around 6–9 years of age.

Since this species is the most coastal of all porpoises, it has the most interaction with human. This interaction often puts the Finless Porpoise at risk. Like other porpoises, large members of this species are killed by entanglement in gill nets.

Living Lagoon....March 2010

10th March 2010 With fresh cold air and rising sun, the muthupet mangrove forest has showed again its enchantic view that lured my mind to walk with my DSLR... some clicks are here...
A spider web in Koraiyar creek
These two mangroves are established on the sediment that was accumulated by the oysters. Floating seeds caught in the oyster bed to form the trees. I can remember that there was no such mangrove thickets in the year 2000 except some small seedlings, when I frequently visited here for my research. Vigorous growth of these (about 10 year old mangroves) are showing a good sign of extension of the forest, at the same time it also shows that the rate of sedimentation is increased in this lagoon due to erosion in catchments. Fishers told that they did not need shoes to walk in the creeks and lagoon 10 years before. Now, every fisher is wearing a shoe to protect him from the oysters which has been proliferating in the last decades.
These two fishermen have no boat to reach the this creek. They have to travel up to 5 kilometers to reach this creek area from their village. So, they depend on boat owned fishers who drop them in the creeks.
A old fisher is collecting the fishes during low tide
Good Enough Catch to feed a fisher family
This fisher is holding two catfishes that are available only in monsoon and post monsoon season. (see below)
An Egret. See the backward, the mangroves are slowly stressed to leave from the creek by the spiny, bushy plant of Prosophis juliflora.
Amazing view
We found a big honey comb of 2 foot in Thiilai maram (E.agallocha) . The bees seems to be unusual in size. This swarm can kill a person.
A fishermen in Muthupet Lagoon. This old fisher is not standing, but floating on the water. He use buoyancy of the car tube and the big aluminium pot to prevent from sinking.
Returning home...
Still waiting for a boat!

Jim in Indian Mangrove Jungle

Mr. Jim Enright has visited OMCAR - mangrove restoration sites in Palk Bay, southeast coast of India. It is a part of our community awareness on mangroves in northern Palk Bay.
We have organized a mangrove educational field trip to facilitate an interaction between Mr. Jim Enright and local college students.
We all have travelled in a rainy monsoon day of 4th November 2009 to Muthupet mangroves. A large flux of fresh water was flowing in to the Muthupet Lagoon. More than expected, we had about 13 students.
Some curious students had taken my GPS to learn the navigation techniques. We stopped in every changing transition area between the zones of mangrove species (based on salinity tolerance). I explained the adaptive characters, structure of flowers and leaves.
Lush green E.agallocha were decorated male and female flowers and A.corniculatum have already produced their curved propagules like a green chillies hanging on the bushes. I could feel that the mangroves need this rainy days to cherish their seeds as well as associated flora and fauna. After reaching the Chief's corner tourist hut, Mr. Jim Enright, has presented a lecture on mangrove services and threats caused by man-made activities. Mr. Enright said "Mangroves play a vital role that provides food, medicines, shelter and protection from natural disasters. So, protection of existing mangroves is important, as the restoration is expensive and time consuming process". I translated his speech for the participants, when the raining sky stopped to favour our board walk.
